The Mariposa Museum and History Center is staffed by volunteer docents and tour guides. Pre-arranged guided tours are available for large groups. Visitors may also take a self-guided tour.

The center was founded in 1957. The purpose of this non-profit corporation is the discovery, preservation and dissemination of knowledge about Mariposa County and the State of California.

The center presents an authentic picture of people and life in Mariposa County. The five-stamp mill at right was used for crushing gold-bearing quartz.

Visitors are encouraged to view the many items of "new" merchandise (some dated more than 100 years) on the shelves of the Gagliardo Store (established in Hornitos in 1884). The counters, shelves, and merchandise were donated to the Society by members of the Gagliardo family.
